The Veterinarian

Purpose

The John W. Whitefield Memorial Scholarship is given in honor of Dr. John W. Whitefield, a pioneer in the application of surgical expertise in clinical practice, and recognizes Dr. Whitefield's many contributions to the advancement of veterinary surgery as well as his lifelong commitment to helping his colleagues, clients and patients.

The scholarship is given to a D.V.M. student who has completed his/her third-year of study at Cornell University's College of Veterinary Medicine and has shown outstanding promise in the field of veterinary surgery.

Academically, the recipient shall be in the top twenty percent of his/her class, and preferably interested in pursuing an internship and surgical residency following graduation. Financial need should also be considered if more than one candidate meets these qualifications. This scholarship does not need to be given annually and will be based on the availability of appropriate candidates.

Selection of the candidate shall be by an appropriate committee with at least two members of that committee representing the faculty involved in the teaching and practice of veterinary surgery at the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine.

The recipient is expected to correspond with Dr. Whitefield's family upon receipt of the scholarship, describing how receiving the scholarship will affect his/her studies and career plans.
