Stephen Abel, DVM recently joined Hudson Highlands Medical Group in March 2009 as a veterinarian and acupuncturist. He attended Iowa State University Veterinary School where he graduated in 1979, with Phi Zeta, Phi Kappa Phi and Gamma Sigma Delta honors.
Dr. Abel's veterinary interests include medicine, surgery, and dermatology. He has been a certified acupuncturist since 1986 and is a member of AVMA and NYSVMS. He enjoys the interactions with his patients and their owners and the challenges and rewards of diagnosing and treating animals with health problems.
Dr. Abel grew up in Verbank, New York and attended Millbrook Central schools. His family has resided in Dutchess County for over 200 years and his current home has been in his family since 1850. He was an American Field Service (AFS) exchange student to Italy from 1971 to 1972, before entering college, and he continues to have close ties to his exchange family in Italy.
Dr. Abel's hobbies include hiking, traveling, fitness, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and tending to his Christmas tree farm. He has five adult children: Ryan, an electrical engineer; Taylor, an MD; Torey, a software engineer; Christian, a fashion retail manager; and Erin, a pastry chef. He has two pets, Yoda, a pug mix and a Sasha, a cat.
